Preparing Yourself for Disruptive Personalities in Your Classroom
Thursday, December 3, 10:30-12:00 in ILC 315
While the behavior of most students in our classrooms is not particularly disruptive or troubling, it is the case that from
time to time a teacher will encounter a truly disruptive student... the kind that can quickly undermine a class and spoil the
learning experience for everyone involved. In extreme cases, students can put others at risk with behaviors that can even result
in fatalities, as evidenced by the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois universities. Each of us should be prepared
for encountering such students in our classrooms.
Using Newspapers to Encourage Critical Thinking Civic Participation and Personal Success in the Classroom
Tuesday, December 15, 10:30-12:00 OR
Wednesday, December 16, 10:30-12:00 in ILC 315
Newspapers are a source of timely, relevant information that is readily available to all faculty and students.
Incorporating current events or critical analysis of journalism into the curriculum can enliven classroom engagement,
foster critical thinking, and broaden student understanding. Participants in this workshop will explore reasons to incorporate
newspaper readings into one’s course, consider instructional strategies from across the disciplines, and examine ways to leverage
our access to the Idaho Statesman to foster student learning at Boise State.
Coming in January -
Introduction to Course Design
Thursday, January 7, 9:00-12:30
Participants will be introduced to the “backwards design” process for course design, in which course components are chosen based on first
having a clear sense of what students should know or be able to do at the end of the course. For faculty who will spend some time during the break with course planning, this workshop will help jumpstart and focus the work.
CTL staff are also available during the break to consult individually with faculty involved in course design and planning.
Presented strategies:
-
Choosing and writing effective learning outcomes for a course
-
Assessing student learning
-
Choosing teaching and learning activities that will actively engage students
-
Aligning all the components of the course to support significant learning
Participants are encouraged to bring syllabi and/or other course materials to this workshop.
